Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend a volunteer orientation at Orange County Animal Services(OCAS). I have been there a number of times, but never thought I’d be volunteering with this group. I remember years ago, when I first started volunteering for animal rescue, I couldn’t imagine volunteering at OCAS because they unfortunately euthanize animals. I just couldn’t bear the thought of seeing a dog there one day and then he’s gone the next, knowing that he wasn’t adopted. However, over the past year I’ve had several opportunities to visit OCAS and I now have such an appreciation for the staff and volunteers. These folks would love to be a no-kill shelter, but there are just too many animals. That’s the bottom line. There are too many animals and not enough adopters so the volunteers and staff at this facility do the best they can to get as many animals adopted as possible. With this new found epiphany, I decided to volunteer.
I attended a special orientation just for photographers. This photography program was started by Paul Wean after he say the segment about Theresa Berg on TV. He really wants to make a difference at this shelter. There was everything from amateur to professional photographers, all with the same goal — to take better pictures which will encourage more adoptions which means less euthanasia.
Part of the orientation was a tour of the facility. As we walked through, I thought how sad that these dogs ended up here through no fault of their owner. Their owners simply didn’t want them anymore for one reason or another. However, with my help these wonderful animals might get a second chance at life. Maybe even a better life than they had before!
I’m excited to be part of this group and can’t wait to start saving some lives!
I also wanted to point out that during January OCAS is offering all animals for just $20.12. These animals are spayed / neutered, up to date on shots, and heartworm tested / treated. The shots alone cost more than $20.12 so this is a great deal. They also have a mobile adoption center so you’ll want to check that out if you’re looking for a new best friend.
